The event at Susanna Foo yesterday went great. I meet a couple of new leads and made a few new friends with several people from the Main Line Area. I feel like I’m starting to establish myself more and more in the area with each networking event that I attend which is something I want to continue doing.
Later in the afternoon Dwayne sat down with Samantha and I and discussed how he used goal setting to help him reach his accomplishments. He mentioned that it is essential for us to start setting goals for ourselves in order for us to succeed in what were reaching out to accomplish. It was a very productive day in regards to gaining applicable knowledge.
Samantha our other intern brought two of her friends in today to train. I learned that I have to work on gauging the seat settings better but I’m sure that will improve with time.

The networking event I attended at Redstone American Grille on Tuesday went rather well. I meet several people from the Philadelphia Multi Sport Professionals organization and made a few contacts and the experience I gained from this event was priceless.
Today I trained to two people and I am starting to feel very comfortable with new clients. The more people I work with the better prepared I feel to take on more clients. This evening I will be attend a networking event at Susanna Foo in Radnor, which I am looking forward to being a part of.

This morning I made some retention calls for Shala so I could get more practice in to help me fine tune my communication skills over the telephone. I also put Mike through his work out today and I will say that his feedback has helped me out greatly.
Early Afternoon Dan Gomez our business consulting came in for our weekly meeting and he had us practice role playing again, with the more practice we get, the better prepared we are when going to a networking event. Dwayne also discussed what he expects from us as trainers here. I have a networking event to attend at Redstone American Grille with the Philadelphia Area multisport professionals. Yesterday I went to Bryn Mawr Running Company with trainer Mike and message therapist Danielle to set a table up in which customers at the store and members from their running club can sign up and enter to win 3 complementary personal training sessions or a free half hour message. This morning I took their contact information and put it into a contacts check list and sent letters and emails out to the individuals that won the 3 complementary personal training sessions. Then I spent some time with the other intern practicing putting each other through exercise progression number one, so we would become more familiar with the equipment and the exercise routine.

I started the morning off by doing some research looking into different types of training and read an article on the importance of target heart rate and max heart rate. Then I went around and lubricated the exercise equipment which we do at least once a week. Then I made 5 retention calls to reach out to past clients to see how there are doing and if they would like to schedule another appointment.
In the afternoon we had several teens come in from the inner city and we showed them around our facility and had them perform resistance exercise on the equipment followed by a lesson in pilates. At the end of their training session we answered any questions that they had about exercise and fitness and talked about the importance of resistance training and why we were here working at Vertex.

Internship Experience Friday July 9, 2010 Jul. 13, 2010
I made it through my 3rd week here at Vertex! I am becoming much more familiar with some of our regular clients and getting to know the new clients coming in. So far everything is going well. I have become much more comfortable with the equipment which makes me feel much more comfortable training people on them. I also played paparazzi today by taking photos of Shala training her clients so we can use them for postings and demonstrations of what proper form looks like.
I put Stefanie and Mike through their workouts earlier today and I can definitely tell that I am getting a lot closer to where I want to be as a trainer. The luxury of having a trainer is that even though I did not feel up to my workout today, I was force to be pushed through my workout and felt absolutely great afterwards and happy I was able to push through it. Without Mike pushing me today, I would not have bothered getting my workout in.

Most of the day this afternoon was spent doing our summer cleaning. All the staff here at Vertex worked as a team to get the job done. I also spent sometime this morning going over the equipment with one of the new trainers and we practiced giving cues to each other as we worked on the machines. I ended my day with researching local networking events which we can attend in the future.

Today I’m getting back into the swing of things after coming off a 3 day holiday weekend. I started off my morning by putting Shala through her workout; the training session took a little longer than expected since Shala was giving me feedback. I’ll be the first to say that I still have some work to do on giving the proper cues, but I feel that will definitely come much sooner than later. I felt much more comfortable with training last week after getting a few sessions under my belt.
This afternoon Dan Gomez came in for our business consulting meeting. He had us brainstorm as a team to come up with a USP (Unique selling proposition.) He also had us role playing by putting us in a situation where we will be networking in the near future. This helps us react better to questions and conversations that we may encounter.
I finished my day up with going through a workout which Mike took photos of to post on facebook and shadowed Stefanie as she took a client through their workout.

Internship Experience Friday July 2, 2010 Jul. 06, 2010
I learned a valuable lesson this morning after my workout. Note: when performing high intensity exercise never eat an unhealthy meal 2 hours prior to exercise. I’ll just say that I learned the hard way today, and paid for it. Live and learn, right!
In the later part of the morning I spent some time talking with a few of the new interns that will be working here at Vertex. I gave them some input on what my experience has been like here for the past week I’ve been working. I just wanted them to get an idea on what has help me along the process and what they can expect and what type of approaches they can take to make it the best experience possible for them.
My afternoon consisted of me doing some observations followed by me training our assistant manager Kelly. As I put her through her workout, one of Vertex’s trainers Mike watched closely over me to make sure I was giving her the proper cues when performing the exercises. After Kelly’s workout both her and Mike gave me valuable feedback on what I did and did not do correctly what I can do to make the proper adjustments.

Internship Experience Thursday July 1, 2010 Jul. 01, 2010
Today was a very productive day for me. Even though I have personal trained in the past, there is still some warming up for me to do before I become very comfortable training clients at a new facility. I started the day off by walking around to different piece of equipment that we have here at Vertex and practiced setting up the weights and making the correct seating adjustments to match the marking on the chart I was following.
Around 10:00, I had an appointment with our company business consultant, Dan Gomez, to talk about different approaches I can take to improve my marketability. He had me do things such as role playing with him. This helped me develop a plan and understand what important points I need to look for before speaking with potential clients. This was probably one the most valuable individuals that I have ever spoke with and I look forward to continue working with him to help me become an expert in sales/marketing.
Afterwards I practiced my training skills by taking fellow trainer Michael through a workout. Upon finishing with that he showed me manual resistance exercises for each piece of equipment in case a client has an issue working with the machine. I was instructed on how to perform the manual resistance exercise and then practiced performing them with the other trainers.

Internship Experience Tuesday June 29, 2010 Jun. 29, 2010
This morning I spent a few hours shadowing clients being put threw their exercise regimen. Around 11:30, I put one of our fellow trainers here at Vertex threw a workout. This experience really helped me become comfortable with working with equipment that is new to me.
Although I have had prior experience with training clients at other facilities in the past, Vertex has taught me that it has a unique type of exercise protocol and equipment in which they use. Hands-on experience with training clients with this particular protocol really helps me learn and gain the confidence I need to successfully train any client.
After training Mike, he put me through a workout and introduced me to the leg press for my very first time. I must say it was one of the most intense leg workouts I have ever done.
Later in the day, we had a business meeting to help us better develop our sales and marketing plan. As a team, we sat down with a consultant and discussed how we can improve our potential trainer prospects experience here at Vertex. We also discussed what it is that separates us from our competitors and how we can better educated our clients about what we do here at Vertex.
